Bite-size beats bento
If your kid has a short lunch period, pack food they can eat in a few big bites and zero prep.
The problem isn’t the amount of food, it’s the fiddly stuff. Peeling clementines, ripping open string cheese, spreading crackers, unwrapping a sandwich from foil — that all costs time. Skip it. Cut fruit and veggies into bite-size pieces. Pre-peel hard-boiled eggs. Use packaging your child can actually open, or put things in small containers they know how to unscrew.
Keep it to one utensil. A spoon is fine for yogurt or soup, but a meal that needs a fork and knife will lose them minutes. Bite-size sandwiches, wraps cut into coins, pasta cups, chicken nuggets, and cheese cubes all go down fast. If you pack a thermos, make sure it opens easily and test it with them once at home.
Don’t overthink variety on a short day. The goal is to get food in and outside sooner. Pack one thing you know they’ll eat first, then add the rest.
You’re not sending a meal, you’re sending time to play.
