Look for board shorts with a gusseted crotch and double-stitched seams.

Beach volleyball is basically squats and lunges in sand. A gusset lets you move without blowing out the crotch after two games. The heavy stitching keeps the waistband and pockets from giving up.

For the fabric, go with a thicker quick-dry polyester or nylon blend. Avoid flimsy cotton blends or anything labeled “performance stretch” from a brand that mostly makes dress shorts. Brands like Birdwell, Patagonia (the baggies), or even Hurley’s more rugged lines tend to hold up. One caveat: the thicker the fabric, the longer it takes to dry, but for active use you’re not swimming shirtless at a resort bar.

Pockets matter if you’re stuffing a car key or your phone in a sand-proof zipper. Get a Velcro or zip closure rear pocket so your shit doesn’t fall out when you dive.
