Board shorts with a tie and Velcro are the only thing that stays on.
You need something that won’t come off when a wave slams you. Loose swim trunks or flimsy bikinis? They’ll be around your ankles or gone.
For men, get boardshorts with a drawstring and a Velcro fly. That combination holds even in a wipeout. Avoid anything with buttons or a loose elastic waist — those fail.
For women, a high-waisted bikini bottom or a one-piece with thick straps is your best bet. Rash guards help too, but the bottom is what really matters if you’re trying to stay covered.
Surfing is not a pool party. Your swimsuit needs to earn its keep.
