Box fan beats tower fan for bedroom cooling

For a bedroom, a box fan is usually the better choice.

Box fans move way more air. That’s the whole point. A tower fan looks nice and takes up little floor space, but it’s basically a gentle breeze in a stick. If you actually want to cool down — especially if the room gets stuffy — a box fan will push air across your bed or out a window much more effectively.

The downsides: box fans are louder and uglier. But noise is subjective. Some people find the white noise helpful for sleeping. If you’re sensitive to sound, look for a “quiet” box fan (they exist) or put the fan farther from your head. Tower fans are quieter by design, but you trade that for airflow that barely registers on a hot night.

Also, box fans are cheaper — $20-30 vs $50-100+ for a decent tower. And they double as window exhaust fans, which tower fans can’t do.

Unless your main priority is aesthetics or you sleep in a walk-in freezer, get the box fan. Your sleep will thank you.
