Box fan rattle is almost always a loose screw or a bent blade

Your box fan rattles at high speed because something is loose or out of balance — usually a screw on the guard or a blade that’s slightly bent.

Start with the obvious stuff. Unplug the fan. Wiggle the front and back grills. If they move, tighten every screw along the rim. Those little screws vibrate loose over time, and at high speed the whole grill shakes against the frame. That’s the most common cause.

Still rattling? Pop the grill off and look at the blades. Even a tiny bend from bumping the fan or a thick layer of dust can throw the balance off. Clean each blade with a damp cloth (dry them well). If you see a blade that’s visibly bent, gently push it back into alignment — don’t force it, just tweak it until the wobble is gone.

One more thing: check if a dust bunny, hair, or a dead bug is stuck between a blade and the motor housing. That can cause a thumping sound at high speed.
