Box fans are dirt cheap to run

Box fans consume very little electricity compared to air conditioners — we’re talking pennies an hour versus dollars.

A typical box fan pulls about 50–100 watts on high. A window AC unit? More like 500–1,500 watts. Central AC can hit 3,000–5,000 watts. So a box fan uses roughly one-tenth the electricity (or less) of an AC.

To put real numbers on it: at the US average of $0.14/kWh, running a box fan 24/7 for a month costs around $5–10. A window AC running the same hours? $50–150. Central AC? $200–500.

Obviously a fan doesn’t cool the air — it just moves it around. So it’s not a replacement for AC when it’s actually hot. But if you’re just trying to stay comfortable on a mild evening or circulate air from a cooler room, the fan wins on cost every time.

The tradeoff is comfort. Fans work on you, not the room. Once the temp hits the mid-80s, you’ll want real cooling. But for those 70–80 degree days, skip the AC and let the box fan do its thing.
