A box fan will work fine on a covered patio, but it’s not built for outdoor humidity and dust, so don’t expect it to last forever.

Box fans are dirt cheap for a reason. They have no weatherproofing. The motor can handle some incidental moisture, but the plastic housing, the switch, and the internal capacitor are vulnerable. On a covered patio where rain never blows in, you’ll probably get a couple of summers out of it. If you leave it out year-round, the humidity alone will corrode the motor bearings and make it noisy or seize up.

My honest take: treat it as a seasonal disposable. If it dies after a year, you’re out $20. If you want something that shrugs off outdoor life, spend $60-80 on a fan actually rated for damp or wet locations. Those have sealed motors, stainless steel hardware, and better housings.
