Box fans work great, but you'll hate carrying it

Yes, you can use a box fan in a tent, but it’s not the best option for most campers.

Box fans move serious air. If you’re car camping with a power hookup or a generator, they’ll keep your tent noticeably cooler and less stuffy. They’re cheaper than most camping-specific fans and work better too.

The problem is everything else. Box fans are bulky and awkward to pack. They’re heavy. They need AC power, so either you’re near an outlet or you’re lugging a giant battery with an inverter. And they’re a legit fire hazard if the cord gets wet or pinched — tent fabric + exposed electronics is not a great combo.

If you’re doing campground camping with electric sites, go for it. Just secure the fan so it doesn’t tip over and keep the cord away from tent walls and zippers. If you’re backpacking or tenting away from power, skip it. Get a USB rechargeable fan that clips to the tent pole. It won’t move as much air, but you’ll actually use it.

Save the box fan for the garage.
