“BPA-free” labels don’t tell you the whole story

The “BPA-free” sticker on a lunch box doesn’t mean much, because manufacturers often swap in BPS or BPF, which are chemically similar and probably just as problematic.

Plastic is a chemistry lottery. When a company brags “BPA-free,” it usually just replaced BPA with a close cousin that hasn’t been studied as hard. If you want to skip the guessing game, look for the recycling number on the bottom. Number 5 (polypropylene) is the safest common plastic for food. Avoid #3 (PVC), #6 (polystyrene), and #7 (often polycarbonate, the BPA stuff — though BPA-free #7 exists, it’s a grab bag).

Phthalates are a separate issue. They show up in soft, flexible plastics — especially PVC, so that squishy lid or flexible compartment divider might be the problem, not the hard shell. If it’s soft plastic, you want “phthalate-free” stated explicitly, not just “BPA-free.”

PFAS is the sneaky one, because it’s not in the plastic at all. It’s in the greaseproof lining of paper or fiber lunch boxes, and sometimes in fabric liners that claim to be stain-resistant. Quick test: if a paper or cloth lunch box shrugs off oil like it’s nothing, it’s probably got a PFAS coating. Hard plastic and stainless steel don’t have this issue.

The honest answer: if you care about this stuff, buy a stainless steel container with a silicone lid and be done with it. No plastic kids, no mystery coatings, no label decoding.
