Braces lunches are a texture game

Braces lunches are a texture game — anything hard or chewy is out, and soft, bite-sized foods are the safest bet.

The rule of thumb is simple: if your kid would have to bite through it or chew it for a while, don’t pack it. That means no whole apples, raw carrots, popcorn, nuts, hard pretzels, jerky, bagels, or crusty bread. And sticky stuff like caramel and fruit leather is just as bad because it yanks at the brackets.

The good stuff is easy to find. Yogurt, applesauce, mac and cheese, pasta with a soft sauce, mashed potatoes, scrambled eggs, quesadillas, soft tortillas with deli meat, and bananas all work. Soft fruits like berries and melon are fine if you cut them small — which is the real secret. Even soft food is annoying in a giant bite, so chop everything into kid-sized pieces and it’s a lot easier to eat.

One more thing: pack a soft backup like pudding or a smoothie pouch. Kids drop stuff, trade food, and get hungry, and a hangry kid with braces is rough on everyone.

Soft and small beats hard and huge — your kid will actually eat it.
