Braces lunches are easier than you think

Packing a braces-friendly lunch is mostly about texture, not taste. You don’t have to give up flavor — you just have to avoid anything that requires serious biting or leaves stuff stuck in brackets.

Think soft, cut small, and easy to chew. Pasta with marinara (not too chewy), scrambled eggs, yogurt, cottage cheese, hummus, mashed potatoes, soup in a thermos, soft sandwiches on white bread with no crusts. Fruit goes a long way: bananas, berries, melon, peeled apple slices, canned peaches. Cut grapes in half. The kid will eat more if it’s finger-friendly and doesn’t hurt.

Avoid the obvious: nuts, popcorn, chips, hard pretzels, raw carrots, steak, crusty rolls. Also be careful with sticky things like caramel and taffy — those are the real enemy, not just chewiness. I’d also skip corn on the cob, but off-the-cob kernels are fine if they’re soft.

A good hack is to pack a little “brace survival kit”: a small travel toothbrush, floss picks, and wax. It saves them from embarrassment after lunch and keeps the whole thing from feeling like a punishment. You can also prep some of these soft foods the night before — a whole batch of pasta salad or egg salad gets three lunches out of one effort.

The goal is just to get them through mealtime without pain or frustration. Soft doesn’t mean baby food unless you want it to.
