Brian Jones Was Fired by the Rolling Stones in Person — Mick, Keith, and Charlie Showed Up at His House

The official story was that Brian Jones left the Rolling Stones by mutual agreement in June 1969, citing musical differences. The real reason was that the band had simply run out of patience. Jones’s drug arrests, erratic behavior, and deteriorating physical and mental health had made him unreliable in the studio and onstage. During the Beggars Banquet sessions, he was often too stoned to contribute, and by early 1969, Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, and Charlie Watts decided he had to go.

The firing itself wasn’t done through a manager or a letter. The three of them drove to Jones’s country house, Cotchford Farm in East Sussex, and told him face-to-face. There’s a famous, somewhat cruel detail: as they left, Jones chased their car down the driveway, shouting something like, “I’m not finished! I’ll keep making records!” He’d already been replaced in the studio by Mick Taylor. A month later, Brian Jones was found dead in his swimming pool.
