Bring your own picnic. Most parks have spots.

Yes, almost every public park allows you to bring your own food, and most have designated picnic areas with tables (and often shade). If you’re looking for a specific park, check their website for “picnic pavilion” or “shelter” — those are the ones with guaranteed tables and roof cover.

That said, not every park is the same. Smaller neighborhood parks might just have a couple of benches in the sun. Big regional parks usually have dedicated picnic groves with charcoal grills and restrooms nearby. If shade is a must, look for a “shelter” or “pavilion” — those are the ones with a roof. You can sometimes reserve them for a small fee.

One thing that trips people up: alcohol. Many parks allow it if you’re having a picnic, but some have strict “no alcohol” rules. Check the park’s regulations before packing a cooler of beer. Also, glass bottles are often a no-go near swimming or sports areas.

If you’re just rolling up with a blanket and sandwiches, you’ll be fine anywhere. Bring a hat for the sun, just in case.
