Bring your own shade.
There is not enough natural shade on most islands to keep a small child comfortable. Trees are sparse, and the sun is relentless. Sunscreen alone won’t cut it for a full day out.
Some resorts and beaches have umbrellas for rent, but you’re gambling on availability and location. With a toddler, you do not want to be hunting for a sliver of shadow at noon. Bring a lightweight pop-up tent or a beach umbrella with an anchor. Hats and sunscreen are mandatory, not optional.
If you’re on a boat excursion, confirm there is covered seating. Many tours assume adults can handle full sun. A two-year-old cannot.
Assume no shade unless proven otherwise. Future you will be grateful for the tent.
