Bring your passport and expect a wait.

Yes, you need a passport (or an enhanced driver’s license). The border crossing can take anywhere from 20 minutes to two hours, depending on the day and time.

The easiest way to combine both sides is to park on the US side (at the State Park lot) and walk across the Rainbow Bridge. You avoid car lines, parking chaos, and high Canadian parking fees. The walk is short and gives you great views of the falls from the bridge itself.

Once across, you’re steps from the tourist strip with the best viewpoints of Horseshoe Falls. You can walk back the same way. Just factor in the return line – it tends to be longer in the afternoon and evening. Weekends and holidays are a gamble.

If you drive, the bridges (Rainbow, Whirlpool, Lewiston-Queenston) all have similar wait times. The Rainbow Bridge is the most popular because it’s closest to the falls, so it often has the longest lines. The Lewiston-Queenston Bridge is farther north and usually faster, but you’ll need to park and shuttle back.

Plan for an extra hour on either side of the border, bring your passports, and go early if you can.

The Canadian view is objectively better – it’s worth the wait, but don’t let a long line sour the trip.
