Broad spectrum means UVA and UVB protection.

Exactly what it sounds like: sunscreen that covers the full range of sun damage. UVB rays burn your skin. UVA rays age it and cause deeper damage. Most sunscreens are good at blocking UVB, but you need “broad spectrum” on the label to know you’re getting UVA protection too.

The FDA requires a specific test for that label. If it says “broad spectrum SPF 30,” it means the SPF 30 is for UVB, and the UVA protection meets a threshold. Not all sunscreens do this—some just say SPF and never mention UVA. Avoid those.

One less thing to guess about at the drugstore.
