Built-in ice packs are the wrong answer for kids' lunches

The best “lunch box with ice pack” is actually just a normal insulated lunch bag and a separate reusable ice pack.

Built-in ice packs sound convenient, but they mean the whole bag has to go in the freezer. That takes up real estate, makes the bag noticeably heavier for a kid to carry, and if it thaws early you’ve got no backup. A separate ice pack adds maybe two seconds to packing and you can buy two to rotate. More flexible, cheaper, and easier to replace.

The one exception is PackIt. Their freezable bags are the only built-in ones I’d recommend — they freeze flat, keep things cold for hours, and survive daily abuse. The catch: you’re still freezing the entire bag, and it needs a whole shelf in your freezer.

For most families, skip the gimmick. Get a decent insulated bag you can wipe clean and a couple of slim ice packs from the grocery store. Your freezer shelf is worth more than that convenience.
