Built-in ice packs are worth the freezer space

Lunch boxes with built-in ice packs genuinely work—better than a regular bag with a loose pack, honestly.

The reason is coverage. A loose pack sits on top or under your food and creates one cold spot. The built-in kind (PackIt and similar) freezes into the bag’s walls, so cold air surrounds your lunch on multiple sides. That’s a real difference for anything you’re eating more than a couple hours after packing.

You do pay for it. The whole bag has to freeze flat for 8+ hours, so it owns a chunk of your freezer. It’s heavier when empty and awkward to wash. And it’s not a miracle worker—parked in a hot car for five hours, food still gets lukewarm no matter what.

For daily lunches—school kids, meal preppers, people without a work fridge—it’s worth it. If you pack once in a while, save your money and get a regular bag with a cheap gel pack.
