Built-in utensil holders are usually a gimmick.

Most lunch boxes with built-in utensil holders are more annoying than helpful, but a few designs actually work.

The problem is most built-in holders are either too tight, too loose, or placed in a spot that makes packing awkward. You end up wrestling a fork out of a weird pocket while your sandwich gets squished.

The ones that work are the simple elastic loops on the side or top. They don’t eat into packing space, keep utensils visible, and are easy to clean. The ones that fail are dedicated zippered compartments inside — they’re a pain to clean and the utensils rattle around.

Honestly? A separate utensil roll or just throwing a fork in your bag is often more practical. But if you want built-in, look for the elastic strap design. That’s about as convenient as it gets.

Don’t buy a lunch box just for the utensil holder — buy one that doesn’t annoy you.
