Built-in utensil slots are a gimmick — get a pocket instead

Most lunch boxes with built-in utensil slots only fit the mini utensils they ship with, so if you want to carry a full-size fork, skip the slot and get a bag with a pocket.

Here’s the deal: those slots live in bento-style boxes where space is tight. Manufacturers design them to match their own short, lightweight utensils — usually around 5 inches — and a standard 7–8 inch fork won’t fit without sticking out and breaking the latch. A full-size fork needs a straight, flat run, and most boxes just don’t have it.
