Burning plastic smell means your pool pump motor is overheating.
That’s the biggest giveaway — if you smell something like hot wires or melting plastic, shut it down immediately.
Other signs are less obvious but just as important. Touch the motor housing (carefully). If it’s too hot to keep your hand on for more than a few seconds, it’s running hot. Same if the thermal overload switch keeps tripping — that’s the motor’s built-in “I’m too hot, turn me off” protection.
You might also notice the pump is louder than usual, or the breaker keeps popping. All point to excess heat from a bad capacitor, blocked vents, or a seized bearing.
Don’t ignore these. Running an overheating motor will eventually cook the windings and cost you a whole new pump. If you catch it early, a simple fix like cleaning the fan blades or replacing a run capacitor can save you hundreds.
