Butter your bread before you pack it

The trick to keeping sandwich bread from getting soggy in an overnight lunch box is a moisture barrier, not just picking “better” bread.

Soggy happens because water from the fillings migrates into the bread. Stop that by spreading a thin layer of fat on both slices before anything else touches them. Butter, mayonnaise, cream cheese, even peanut butter work. It seals the bread so the moisture stays where it belongs — in the fillings.

Then deal with the worst offenders. Tomatoes and cucumbers are basically water bombs. Put them in the middle of the sandwich, not against the bread, or pack them separately and add them the next morning. Pat lettuce dry before using it. If you want extra insurance, toast the bread lightly yesterday. The toasted structure holds up far better overnight.

This isn’t complicated. It just means making the sandwich with intent instead of putting everything on and hoping for the best. Future You gets a sandwich that still crunches, and that’s worth the extra minute.
