Buy the bento box, not the silicone bags

A compartmentalized bento box is the best way to cut out plastic baggies, and no, silicone snack bags don’t fit all that neatly in them — but you won’t need them.

Honestly, the whole point of a bento is that you don’t have to bag anything. Get one with fixed or adjustable compartments (PlanetBox, Bentgo, Yumbox, LunchBots are all solid) and you just drop the food in. Sandwich in one section, carrots in another, fruit in the third. No baggie, no silicone pouch, no problem.

As for silicone bags: they’re great for things that don’t belong in a bento — marinating stuff, freezing leftovers, packing a loose pile of trail mix without it going everywhere. But inside a bento? They’re soft and floppy, so they don’t sit flush in the compartments. They squish, they fold, and suddenly your neat lunch looks like a rumpled sock. If you really need a barrier for wet or saucy foods, use tiny silicone cups that actually fit the sections, like the ones that come with Yumbox, not full-size bags.

So skip the Stasher bags for daily lunch packing. A decent bento box replaces every baggie you were using, and it’s the only thing you have to remember in the morning.
