Buy the lunch box with the luggage sleeve

For long flights or road trips, get a soft-sided lunch cooler with a pass-through luggage sleeve on the back — not one with clips.

The sleeve is the whole game. It slides over your suitcase handle so the lunch bag rides on top of your roller bag and you keep both hands free for coffee, boarding pass, and your dignity. A clip that hooks onto a seat-back pocket sounds clever, but in practice a loaded bag hangs awkwardly, swings into the knees of the person behind you, and airline crews don’t love stuff clipped around their cabin.

Look for the words “luggage pass-through” in the specs. Engel’s Straight Jacket series has one, Carhartt makes a few lunch boxes with it, and some L.L.Bean insulated totes do too. Insulation matters less than you’d think once the sleeve exists — a decent ice pack and a closed bag gets you through a six-hour flight or a day in the car.

The seat-back problem solves itself. You put the bag under the seat, unzip it, and pass out snacks to the whole row.

Future you gets to keep both hands. That’s worth more than a backpack full of crumbs.
