Capsule first, hangers second

The most effective method is to build your capsule wardrobe first, then switch to slim velvet hangers. Doing it in the other order is a waste of time.

Here’s why: Slim velvet hangers are great, but they only save a few inches per foot of rod space. That helps — but not nearly as much as getting rid of clothes you never wear. A capsule wardrobe cuts the volume by 50–80%. Suddenly you have empty rod space, not just slightly thinner hangers.

So do this: Pull everything out. Go through piece by piece and keep only what fits your current life and style. That’s the hard part. Once you’ve got your 30–40 items, toss the wire hangers and the bulky wood ones. Replace them with velvet hangers. They’re thin, they grip fabric, and they cost about a buck each. Done.

Don’t buy the hangers first. You’ll just end up moving clutter from one type of hanger to another. That’s organizing, not decluttering.
