Cardboard and foil beat overpriced bento boxes

Cardboard and foil is the move. You can make perfectly good lunch box dividers in about two minutes with stuff you already have.

Cut a piece of clean cardboard to fit the width of your lunch box, then wrap it tightly in aluminum foil or plastic wrap. That makes it waterproof and wipeable. Fold the ends so it stands upright, and you’ve got a divider that separates savory from sweet, or keeps your sandwich from crushing the grapes.

Another easy trick: use silicone muffin cups. They’re not exactly dividers, but they act like built-in compartments — drop one in for berries, another for crackers, and the lunch box stays organized. If you have small Tupperware containers, those work too. They’re basically reusable compartments that also happen to be leakproof.

The real point is you don’t need a special bento system. Any rigid, food-safe barrier works. Just make sure the cardboard is clean and the foil has no holes, and you’re set.
