Chain brake and throttle lockout. That's it.
Those are the two non-negotiable safety features for a beginner. The chain brake stops the chain if the saw kicks back (which it will, at least once). The throttle lockout prevents you from accidentally hitting the trigger when you’re carrying it or reaching for a branch.
Everything else is nice but optional. Low-kickback bar and chain are standard on most homeowner saws now. Anti-vibration is comfort, not safety. Electric chainsaws are less intimidating but still kick back — don’t skip the brake just because it’s electric.
Pick a saw from a major brand (Stihl, Husqvarna, Echo, or even Ryobi if you’re on a budget) that has both features and fits your hands well. Take the safety class your local dealer offers. A sharp chain and a clear head are the real safety features.
