Chain Brake On in Storage? Your Clutch Springs Are Fine.

Leaving the chain brake engaged during winter storage won’t put any harmful tension on the clutch springs.

The chain brake does not touch the clutch itself. It grabs the clutch drum, and the clutch springs only get loaded when the engine spins the shoes outward against those springs. With the saw off, the springs are relaxed. The brake locking the drum doesn’t pull on them — the clutch isn’t engaged, so there’s no connection.

If anything, leaving the brake on is the relaxed position for the brake’s own spring. Most saws have a fail-safe brake that is spring-loaded to engage. Storing it with the brake off holds that spring back all winter, which is the position more likely to fatigue it.

So park it with the brake on. The clutch won’t care, and your brake spring will probably thank you.
