Chainsaw chaps are the next essential after helmet and gloves.
Yes, chaps – specifically chainsaw chaps – are the one piece of gear you absolutely need beyond helmet and gloves. They’re not optional.
Chaps are made of multiple layers of cut-resistant fibers (usually Kevlar or similar) that catch the chain and jam the saw before it reaches your leg. Without them, a kickback or slip means a fast trip to the ER.
Choose chaps that meet ANSI or UL certification – look for the label. The most important thing is fit: they should cover from your upper thigh down past your shin when you’re standing, and they shouldn’t drag on the ground. Try them on over your work pants. Some are apron-style (wrap around both legs, fasten at waist) and some are individual leg chaps. The apron style is more common and usually fine.
Avoid the cheap no-name ones from Amazon with no certification. A good pair runs $60–$100 and lasts years. Also get hearing protection and steel-toe boots with good grip, but chaps are where you really save your legs.
Don’t skip chaps – a chainsaw can bite through jeans in a fraction of a second.
