Check extension cords monthly — or before every heavy use.

Yes, you should inspect extension cords at least once a month, and definitely before plugging in anything that draws serious power — space heaters, power tools, air conditioners, that kind of thing.

Signs you’re looking for:

  • Frayed or exposed wire. If you see copper, replace immediately.
  • Cracked or brittle insulation, especially near the plug ends.
  • Bent or broken prongs. If a prong is loose or bent, the cord is done.
  • Discoloration or scorch marks — that means it got hot, which means damage.
  • Cuts or nicks in the outer jacket. Even a small cut can lead to internal wire damage.

Also: give it the smell test. If it smells like burnt plastic or ozone, toss it.

Extension cords are cheap. House fires are not. If you see any of these signs, don’t try to tape it or splice it — buy a new one.
