It depends entirely on your specific laptop model and CPU generation. There’s no universal answer. Most modern laptops with one free SODIMM slot support up to 16GB or 32GB in that slot, but not because of the soldered RAM—it’s because the chipset or BIOS limits the total system memory.
For example, some Intel 12th-gen laptops support up to 64GB total, split between soldered and socketed. Others cap at 32GB total. The soldered part might be 4GB or 8GB, so the socketed slot’s max is that total minus the soldered amount. But often the official max per slot is listed separately.
Your best bet: Google your exact model number + “max RAM” or “RAM upgrade.” Don’t trust the “up to 16GB” sticker from Best Buy—check the manufacturer’s support page. And if you’re feeling lucky, you can sometimes exceed the listed max, but I wouldn’t count on it.
If the laptop is more than a few years old, 8GB socketed next to 4GB soldered is usually fine. Newer ones often let you run 32GB in the slot next to 8GB soldered. It’s a gamble, but a cheap one—RAM is returnable.
