Chemical mosquito control comes with serious trade-offs.

Using chemical pesticides for mosquitoes in your yard kills more than just mosquitoes—it harms beneficial insects, pets, and possibly you. Most residential fogging or spraying uses pyrethroids or organophosphates. Those don’t discriminate. They wipe out bees, butterflies, fireflies, and the predatory insects that keep other pests in check. That’s why mosquito spraying often leads to bigger aphid or spider mite problems a few weeks later.

There’s also the resistance angle. Mosquitoes breed fast, so when you spray a whole neighborhood, the survivors are the ones that can handle the chemical. Next season you’ve got super-mosquitoes that need stronger stuff. It’s a losing arms race. Plus, those chemicals linger on surfaces and in standing water. If you have kids crawling around or dogs that eat grass, it’s not great. The EPA says acute exposure risks are low at labeled rates, but “low” isn’t zero, and chronic effects aren’t well studied for backyard levels.
