Circling cleaner? Check the diaphragm first.
A suction-side cleaner that only circles usually has a torn diaphragm or stuck turbine, not a pump problem.
Here’s the logic: if the pump or filter were the issue, the cleaner would move weakly or not at all. But circular motion means one drive mechanism is working while the other is dead. That points to something inside the cleaner itself.
Start by shutting off the pump and pulling the cleaner out. Open the body and inspect the diaphragm—that’s the rubber membrane that pulses and drives the unit. Look for tears, pinholes, or warping. If it’s damaged, replace it. That is the single most common cause.
While you’re in there, check the turbine or drive gears for debris. A pebble or piece of grit can jam one side and turn your cleaner into a sad, orbiting robot. Make sure everything spins freely by hand. Clean out any muck and reassemble.
If the diaphragm looks good and the turbine spins smooth, then move on to checking hoses for flow, but honestly, that’s rarely the story. Nine times out of ten, it’s a torn diaphragm or a stuck turbine. The cleaner’s telling you exactly what’s wrong—you just have to look inside.
