Citronella is risky for pets, especially cats

No, not really—especially for cats.

Citronella shows up in dog collars and sprays as a “natural” bark deterrent. And yes, the low concentration used in those collars is generally considered safe for dogs if used correctly. But “generally safe” doesn’t mean risk-free. Some dogs get skin irritation or respiratory issues, especially if they’re sensitive or the product is overused.

Cats are a different story. Citronella oil is toxic to cats. Their livers lack the enzymes to process certain plant compounds, and even a small amount of ingestion (or strong inhalation) can cause drooling, vomiting, or worse. Never put citronella on a cat, and don’t use citronella candles or oils around them either.

Honestly, there are better options for both species—flea prevention, calming aids, training support—that don’t involve essential oils. Citronella is not your best bet.

Your pet doesn’t need to smell like a bug candle.
