Citronella oil is safe — if you dilute it

Yes, but only when diluted properly.

Pure citronella oil is strong stuff. A few drops directly on your skin is asking for redness, burning, or a full-on rash. It’s a concentrated essential oil, and your skin isn’t built to handle that undiluted.

The standard advice is to mix it with a carrier oil (coconut, jojoba, almond) at about 0.5–1% concentration — that’s around 3–6 drops per ounce of carrier. Even then, do a patch test first. Some people are just allergic.

It’s generally recognized as safe by the FDA as a topical insect repellent, but that assumes you’re using it correctly. Don’t put it on broken skin, near your eyes, or on babies under six months.
