Clean it and store it.
Pretty much. A solar cover’s main enemies are dirt, algae, and UV degradation when not in use. Do those two things right and it’ll last two to four years, which is normal for these things.
Rinse the cover with a hose every few weeks to prevent dirt from scratching the bubbles. If it gets nasty, a mild bleach solution (or pool cleaner) and a soft brush works. Don’t use a pressure washer — you’ll pop the bubbles. Dry it flat before storing if you can, but honestly most people just roll it up wet. It’s fine, just lay it out in the sun to dry the next day.
The real killer is dragging the cover across concrete or decking. That tears the top layer. Always carry it or use a reel. If you don’t have a reel, get one. Future you will thank you.
Store it out of direct sun when not in use for weeks at a time. UV will turn it brittle. A garage or shed is ideal, but a tarp over the rolled cover works too.
That’s it. No magic potions.
