Clean your chainsaw air filter with soapy water — that's almost always enough.

Almost always. A clogged air filter makes the engine run rich (too much fuel, not enough air), causing loss of power, rough idle, hard starting, and sometimes black smoke. If your chainsaw feels sluggish or dies at full throttle, check the filter first.

To clean it without damage: remove the filter, tap out loose debris. Wash in warm soapy water (dish soap works fine). Rinse, squeeze dry — don’t wring or twist. Let it air dry completely before reinstalling. For paper filters, just tap them clean and replace when they look dirty. Never use gasoline or compressed air — gasoline ruins foam, and compressed air can blow holes in paper.

A clean filter takes five minutes and saves you a lot of frustration.
