Clear bins beat cardboard for under-bed storage

Clear bins are worth the extra cost for storing off-season clothes under the bed.

Cardboard boxes are cheap, and I get it — you already have them from moving. But here’s the thing: under-bed storage is basically a black hole. You’re reaching into darkness, trying to remember which box has winter sweaters vs. summer shorts. Labels fall off. Boxes get crushed when you stack them. And if anything spills or gets dusty? Good luck.

Clear bins solve most of that. You can see what’s inside without pulling everything out. They stack without collapsing. They’re usually sturdy enough to protect clothes from dust and pests if you get ones with tight lids. The downside is cost — they’re $8–15 each vs. free cardboard. And you need to measure your bed clearance first, because some bins are too tall.

If you’re organizing a seasonal swap twice a year, cardboard with a clear labeling system (like large print on duct tape) works fine. But if you’re the type who lets it sit for months and then needs to find something fast, spend the money.

Future you will thank you when you don’t have to pull out three boxes to find your sweaters.
