Coach's retro re-releases are not the same quality as the originals.

No. They’re not. The leather is thinner, the finishing is more plasticky, and the stitching doesn’t feel as solid. The 1990s Coach bags were made from full-grain glove-tanned leather that aged beautifully. The new “retro” line uses corrected-grain leather with a coating that looks okay new but won’t develop the same patina.

I’ve handled both. The difference is obvious if you compare them side by side. The new ones are lighter, shinier, and feel more like a fashion accessory than a lifetime bag. Coach is a much bigger company now with different cost structures. They’re not trying to make heirlooms anymore—they’re making trend-driven products that look like the old ones.

If you want genuine 1990s quality, buy vintage. It’s often cheaper and actually better made. These re-releases are just nostalgia bait with a modern price tag.
