Coated mousepads handle spills way better.
Yes, drastically better. Uncoated cloth will drink your coffee like a thirsty sponge, leave a permanent stain, and feel crusty forever. A nano-coated pad makes the liquid bead up and roll off, or at least sit on the surface so you can dab it away with a napkin.
The difference is night and day. Most nano-coatings are basically a hydrophobic layer—same stuff used on phone screens or outdoor gear. Coffee, soda, even water won’t soak in. You wipe it off and the pad is clean. Uncoated cloth? That spill is now part of the mousepad. It’ll smell weird, attract grime, and your mouse will drag through a sticky patch for the rest of its life.
One caveat: not all nano-coatings are created equal. Cheap ones wear off after a few months. Higher-end ones (like from reputable gaming or desk mat brands) hold up better. And if you spill something syrupy like a milkshake or soda with sugar, even a coated pad might leave a residue if you don’t wipe it fast enough. But still miles better than uncoated cloth.
Skip the bare cloth if you’re clumsy with drinks.
