Cold water is the enemy of pool heaters

Thermal shock happens when cold water hits a hot heat exchanger, and it can crack the thing. Pool heaters run hot inside — especially gas models — and if a burst of cold water suddenly flows through a hot exchanger, the metal contracts too fast and can warp or split. That’s the quick way to kill a heater that otherwise runs fine.

The fix is pretty simple: don’t let cold water hit the heat exchanger until it’s warm enough. An automated bypass or thermal regulator does exactly that. It recirculates some of the outgoing hot water back into the incoming cold water, so the water entering the heater is already warm. Once the water reaches a safe temperature, the bypass opens up and lets full flow through.

That little valve is basically cheap insurance. Replacing a heat exchanger is way more expensive, not to mention the labor and downtime. If your pool heater doesn’t have one, I’d get it retrofitted or at least ask your pool tech whether your setup makes it necessary.

You don’t need to know the plumbing inside out — just remember that cold water is the thing that cracks heaters, and the bypass is what stops it.
