Colloidal oatmeal beats aloe for windburn

Colloidal oatmeal is the better choice for windburned cheeks because it actually repairs the skin barrier, while aloe is mostly temporary cooling.

Windburn isn’t really a burn — it’s irritated, dehydrated skin from cold wind stripping the moisture barrier. That’s why oatmeal works so well. It contains avenanthramides (anti-inflammatory compounds) and beta-glucan, which forms a protective film. It soothes the redness and helps the skin hold onto moisture.

Aloe is fine in a pinch — it feels good because it’s mostly water and cools on contact. But it evaporates quickly and doesn’t do much for barrier repair unless you slap an occlusive on top right after. If all you have is aloe, use it, but follow with something thick like Vaseline or a ceramide cream.

How I’d treat it: Cleanse gently with lukewarm water (no soap if possible). Mix colloidal oatmeal with a little water or plain yogurt into a paste,
