Compartment trays are a gimmick. Get separate sealed containers.

Compartment lunch boxes rarely stop flavors from swapping; what works is either individually sealed compartments or small separate containers.

Most “bento boxes” with a single lid and a divided tray just keep the food from touching. That’s fine for a sandwich and fruit, but try putting a saucy curry next to rice and you’ll get cross-contamination of smells — and sometimes liquids if the box tips. The only way to truly block flavor is a seal between each section: either the lid presses down onto the dividers (like Yumbox) or each food sits in its own lidded container.

If you already own a compartment tray, just add a few small glass or silicone containers inside for the wet stuff. Or go with stackable bento boxes like Monbento — each tier is its own sealed box. Works for strong smells and avoids that weird “everything tastes vaguely like the leftover sauce” problem.

Your lunch should taste like what it is, not like everything else.
