Complex carbs beat omega-3s for SAD carb cravings

Complex carbohydrates are the most effective dietary strategy for managing carb cravings in Seasonal Affective Disorder, but omega-3s help with the underlying mood issues.

Here’s why that matters. SAD cravings aren’t about willpower—they’re your brain desperately trying to boost serotonin when light is scarce. Complex carbs (think oats, sweet potatoes, brown rice, legumes) help by nudging tryptophan into your brain, which then converts to serotonin. That’s the direct biochemical fix your body is asking for.

Omega-3 fatty acids (from fish, flax, or supplements) don’t directly kill the craving. They do support overall brain health and mood regulation, which might make the craving less intense or more manageable over time. But for that sudden 4 PM “I need bread” feeling? Complex carbs are your lever.

My take: don’t fight the craving with protein or fat alone—you’ll lose. Instead, lean into strategic complex carbs at dinner or in the afternoon. Pair them with some omega-3s if you can. The combo handles the immediate urge while the omega-3s work on the longer game.

Save the pasta for evening, not the morning.
