Container Size Beats Willpower
Container size beats willpower, so pack your lunch in a divided box and fill it by the plate rule: half vegetables, a quarter protein, a quarter carbs.
The plate rule works because it builds the portion right into the container. You’re not guessing or measuring every day; you’re just filling the sections. Protein goes on one quarter (chicken, tofu, eggs, beans), and the other quarter gets your carbs (rice, quinoa, bread, potatoes). The rest of the space goes to vegetables. They’re low-calorie and high-volume, which fills you up without blowing your daily budget.
One thing people forget: add a small amount of fat — a few nuts, some cheese, or an olive-oil dressing. Fat keeps you satisfied. Cut it out completely and you’ll be raiding the vending machine at 3 p.m. Snacks should get the same treatment: portion them into small bags instead of bringing the whole container.
If you want to tighten things up, weigh your food for the first few days so you see what a real portion looks like in your containers. After that, eyeballing works fine.
Your lunch box is a decision made in advance, so you don’t have to make one when you’re hungry.
