Contoured wrist rests are overrated.

Probably not in a good way. The fixed curve of a gaming mousepad’s wrist rest forces your wrist into one angle, which is exactly what you don’t want in a long session.

Your wrist moves naturally through a range of angles as you aim, click, and scroll. A hard plastic or foam contour locks it into a specific position, creating pressure points and potentially compressing the carpal tunnel. Many ergonomic folks say wrist rests should support the palm, not the wrist itself. A flat, soft surface that lets you adjust your wrist position freely is usually better.

If you already have wrist issues, a contoured pad might mask discomfort while the strain builds. If you don’t, it could create problems where none existed.

Your wrist knows best—don’t let foam decide.
