Converting to saltwater is mostly just buying a generator.
It’s simpler than you think. You don’t drain the pool or redo the plumbing.
You already have a pump and filter. The only new hardware is a salt chlorine generator (a.k.a. salt cell) that gets installed in the return line after the filter. Most kits come with a control box and the cell housing. You cut a section of pipe, glue in the union fittings, wire the box to power, and you’re done.
Then you dump in pool salt — about 40–50 pounds per 2,000 gallons. Let the pump run for 24 hours to dissolve it, turn on the generator, and set the output level. The cell converts salt into chlorine through electrolysis. You’ll still need to test and adjust cyanuric acid (stabilizer) so the chlorine doesn’t burn off in the sun.
That’s it. No more buying and storing chlorine tablets. But salt cells do wear out every 3–5 years and cost a couple hundred to replace.
