Count repetitions, not confidence

For slow-burn resolutions like learning a language, the only daily metrics that matter are the ones you can control: time spent and specific repetitions.

The problem with long-term goals is that progress is invisible day to day. If you track “how fluent do I feel?” you’ll get discouraged. Instead, track things that are binary and effort-based. Stuff like:

  • Minutes of active listening or reading
  • Number of Anki cards reviewed
  • Conversations started (even if they’re terrible)
  • Pages read out loud

Pick two or three. Keep a simple log. Don’t obsess over streaks—just note if you did the thing. Over months, the cumulative data will show you the truth, and the emotional noise fades.

The scoreboard takes care of itself.
