Crochet swimsuits are for looking, not swimming.
No. They are not practical for actual swimming.
The problem is the yarn. Cotton or acrylic soaks up water like a towel. You will be dragging an extra five pounds of water weight, and that water will stay cold on your skin when you get out. The holes stretch out when wet, so coverage becomes questionable. And sand? Sand will live in those stitches forever.
They work fine for poolside lounging, beach photos, and sitting on a towel with a drink. But if you plan to swim laps, chase kids in the water, or do anything more than wade to your waist, get something made for swimming—nylon and spandex.
Wearing a crochet swimsuit to actually swim is like wearing a wool sweater to the beach. Cute in theory, uncomfortable in practice.
