Crumbs fall. Pack like it.
Packing a gluten-free lunch box safely is mostly about keeping the gluten-free food sealed and on top so wheat crumbs never reach it.
The risk isn’t the food itself — it’s everything that touches it. A floured counter, a shared knife, a crumb at the bottom of the box. So the rule is simple: separate and protect.
If the box is shared with gluten eaters, give the gluten-free person their own labeled lunch box. If that’s not possible, use hard-sided containers with tight lids, not bags. Bags get squished and crumbs sneak in. And when you load everything in, put the gluten-free container on top — crumbs fall down, not up. Wash the box with hot soapy water between uses or line it with parchment and swap it daily.
Same logic applies before you pack. Don’t build a gluten-free sandwich on the same board you just cut regular bread on. Ten seconds with a clean board or a sheet of parchment paper kills that risk entirely.
It’s not obsessive. It’s just the difference between a normal lunch and a miserable afternoon.
